Joseph M. Backus papers relating to Gelett Burgess, 1953-1982.

Collection consists of materials accumulated during Backus's research on Burgess for his doctoral dissertation. It includes copies of his letters soliciting information about Burgess; copies of reports on interviews with people in San Francisco, Carmel, Big Sur, etc., who were acquainted with him; correspondence with Professor James D. Hart on the project; copies of Hart's letters on Bancroft Library's Burgess collection. Also includes unpublished biography of Burgess, together with research notes, correspondence, and other related materials.

American author and humorist Gelett Burgess (1866-1951) was educated as an engineer and worked briefly for a railroad. He taught topographical drawing between 1891 and 1894 at the University of California, Berkeley until he lost his position after deliberately toppling a campus statue he found to be an eyesore.
